Chaplain's Corner September 2025

As fall begins there are a few topics to be aware of, both religious and secular as we serve our community of people with diverse needs and backgrounds. They include:

·       Paryushan – Holiest days for Jains. An 8-day festival signifying human emergence into a new world of spiritual and moral refinement.

·       Mawlid-al-Nabi Observances of the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Celebrated with carnivals, large street processions, and the decorating of homes and mosques.

A bit closer to our role as first responders is the designation of the month of September as:

·       National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Take time to remember the lives lost to suicide for those living with depression. Acknowledge the struggles that individuals, families, and communities face regarding suicide. Take care of yourself and your fellow department members when struggles with mental health arise.

·       National Recovery Month Focus on supporting individuals on their journey to recovery from substance use disorders and mental health challenges, promoting awareness and access to treatment and recovery resources. Be mindful of your own and your fellow members’ mental health and potential or actual struggles with alcohol and/or substance abuse.

·       Firefighter Appreciation Month Appreciating and honoring firefighters for all they do!

Of course, we don’t want to forget Labor Day (September 1) recognizing the rights and efforts of workers, the National Day of Service and Remembrance or 9-11 Day marking the anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks and the loss of 343 of our brothers in New York City.

Enjoy the life you have, and the lives you help to preserve and protect this month and all year long!

Stay safe, I’m here when you need me,

Chaplain Sean
