Monthly Spiritual Reflection - February

February 3, 2025

Monthly Spiritual Reflection

February is often associated with Valentine’s Day, love, and romance. Saint Valentine, who many celebrate on February 14th, is the patron saint of love and marriage. He was martyred for performing secret Christian marriages in defiance of Emperor Claudius II. Jailed for a time before he was executed, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. The day before his death he wrote her a love letter, signing it “from your Valentine.” thus starting the tradition of exchanging love letters for what has become Valentine’s Day.

Christians remember the words of Jesus when he said “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (Gospel of John 15:13).

Experiencing and expressing love is different for different people. Some show and receive love in a romantic way. Others love in actions. In many ways those in the fire service love others through their actions, “laying down” their lives for community members whom they serve.

Many faith traditions observe special celebrations in February.  These reflect the diversity of people we may encounter as we carry out our duties in the community among people with a variety of beliefs and backgrounds.

As we serve others it can be helpful to be mindful of their beliefs and values as we respond to provide care and protection. Here are some of the more common ones that you might check out if you want to grow in your own spiritual journey:

1.      Tu BiShvat – A Jewish celebration of the earth.

2.      Parinirvana Day – A Buddhist celebration of final nirvana.

3.      Ayyam-i-ha – A Baha’I holiday honoring divine essence of God.

4.      Imbolc- A pagan and wiccan festival celebrating fire, light, and life.

Regardless of who or how you celebrate love, this month may you experience the joy of giving and receiving love from others and God as you understand them. I’m here if you need me. Stay safe, and Happy Valentines Day!

Yours in Service,
