Chaplain Corner August
Chaplain Corner – August
As we enjoy the last month of summer many in our community may be enjoying various religious and other observances. Some of the major ones include:
· Arbaeen – Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson.
·
Tisha B'Av – Jewish remembrance of a number of disasters in their history, primarily the destruction of both Solomon's Temple and the Second Temple in Jerusalem.
·
Feast of the Assumption of Mary – Roman Catholic observance of Jesus’ mother Mary being physically taken
to heaven
·
Krishna Janmashtami - Hindu celebration of the birth of Krishna.
For those who enjoy other types of celebrations, don’t worry because there’s:
· 2nd Beer Day
· 16th Bratwurst Day and
· 19th Potato Day
A bit closer to our role as healthcare providers is the designation of the month of August as:
· Immunization Awareness Month and
· National Traffic Awareness Month.
The World Health Organization reports that more than 1 million fatalities and 20-50 million injuries occur in traffic-related incidents yearly, with the numbers likely being higher as these are only the reported incidents. These designations can be thought of as celebrations also. By encouraging both immunizations and traffic safety we celebrate, value, and protect lives.
We may think of ourselves as religious, having some faith, or having no faith at all. We may celebrate religious holidays, food holidays, or healthcare awareness efforts. Regardless, as those who provide safety and emergency response services to our community, we can also celebrate our own role in helping to celebrate the value of every human life we encounter, this month and all year long! Enjoy the life you have, and the lives you help to preserve and protect this month and all year long!
Stay safe,
Chaplain Sean
