Monthly Spiritual Reflection
January, being the start of a new calendar year, is often a time for renewed commitment to goals. Your goals might be to get that next level certification, improve proficiency in your drills, or increase your fitness. Goals might be more personal like mending a broken relationship or exploring and growing your spiritual life. Many faith traditions observe special celebrations in honor of starting a new year. These reflect the diversity of people we may encounter as we carry out our duties in the community among people with a variety of beliefs and backgrounds.
As we serve others it can be helpful to be mindful of their beliefs and values as we respond to provide care and protection. Here are some of the more common ones that you might check out if you want to grow in your own spiritual journey:
1. New Year's Day (Christian) – January 1: The Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Many churches hold watch-night services on New Year’s Eve, and Christians and non-Christians make New Year’s resolutions.
2. Epiphany (Christian) – January 6: God reveals his salvation to the world when He revealed Himself through the manifestation of Jesus.
3. Christmas (Christian-Orthodox) – January 7: Orthodox Christmas, marking the birth of Jesus.
4. World Religion Day (Bahai) – January 21: A celebration of the teachings of unity found in all religious traditions. The observance begins at sundown.
5. Sadeh (Zoroastrianism) – January 24: Also known as Adur-Jashan (feast of fire). The bonfire drives back the winter in defiance of Ahriman (Satan).
6. Thaipusam (Hindu) – January 25: A celebration of the victory of good over evil.
7. Mahayana New Year (Buddhist) – January 25: A time for self-reflection. Lessons from past mistakes are learned, and the goal is to become a better version of yourself.
8. Holocaust Memorial Day (Jewish) – January 27: The day commemorating the millions of Jews and minority groups who were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
