Walking is a fantastic way to get around; it's good for your health, the environment, and it’s a great way to explore your community. However, as a pedestrian, you are one of the most vulnerable people on the road. Understanding and following some basic pedestrian safety rules is essential for staying safe.
Whether you’re walking to work, going for a leisurely stroll, or taking the kids to school, being aware of your surroundings can help you avoid potential pedestrian accidents. Here are some key road safety tips to ensure your walking safety and help you get to your destination securely.
Master the Crosswalk

This may seem like a no-brainer, but crosswalk safety is about more than just stepping onto the painted lines. Always use designated crosswalks whenever they're available. Before you step into the street, make eye contact with the driver to confirm they see you. A simple nod or wave can be a clear signal that you're about to cross. Even if you have the right of way, never assume a vehicle will stop for you. Always look left, right, and then left again before proceeding.
Ditch the Distractions
In our connected world, it's easy to be distracted by your phone. However, a moment of distraction can have serious consequences. To ensure your walking safety, put your phone away. That means no texting, scrolling, or taking calls while you're crossing the street. Distracted walking is a major cause of pedestrian accidents, so keep your eyes and ears focused on your surroundings.
See and Be Seen
Your visibility is one of your most important safety tools, especially after dark. To help drivers spot you, wear bright, reflective clothing. If you're walking at night, consider carrying a flashlight to make yourself more noticeable. Remember, a driver can only react to what they can see.
Follow the Rules of the Road

Just like drivers, pedestrians have rules they need to follow. Always obey traffic signals and pedestrian crossing lights. A "don't walk" signal means what it says; don't start to cross. If you're caught in the middle of the street when the light changes, do your best to get to the other side safely and quickly.
Walk on Sidewalks
Sidewalks are your designated safe zone. Whenever possible, use them. If there isn't a sidewalk available, the rule is simple: walk facing traffic. This allows you to see oncoming vehicles and gives you time to react if a car swerves or gets too close. Always walk as far away from the roadway as you can.
Be Cautious in Parking Lots and Driveways
Parking lots can be a minefield for pedestrians. Drivers are often focused on finding a spot or backing out, and they may not see you. When walking in a parking lot, stay vigilant. Watch out for cars that are backing up or pulling out, and make yourself visible. The same goes for driveways; always expect a car to be coming out as you walk past.
